Working Fire in Mattydale
Wed. Dec 30th 2009

On Wednesday afternoon,  The Mattydale Fire Department was activated along with Liverpool, Lyncourt and Moyers Corners Fire Departments for a report of a garage fire attached to a residence.

Cars 2 and 3 (Chief Gunther and Chief Falise) marked out together and Car 3 reported heavy smoke from a distance.  On arrival Car 2 reported a single story ranch type residence with heavy fire in the garage and signaled a "99", our code for a working fire.

Chief Gunther assumed command of the incident and Chief Falise took the role of operations chief.  Quint 3 (Capt Dwyer) arrived shortly after the Chiefs and secured a hydrant line and laid in to the residence.  Chief Falise reported everyone out of the residence except the family dog and requested 2 handlines from the Q-3 crew.  A 2 1/2" line with a straight bore nozzle (Dwyer & Bilger) was put in place at the front of the garage which had ignited a full size pickup truck in the driveway and was seriously close to igniting the house next door which did sustain extensive damage to the exterior siding and windows.  At the same time, Chief Falise ordered a 1 3/4" handline (Michels & Schad) into the residence and move into the kitchen and operate into the garage from the house.  This proved to darken the fire in short order.  By this time fire had taken hold of the attic space and was running across the entire house.  As additional crews arrived they were instructed to start pulling ceilings and a third line was pulled and brought into the residence.  With two lines working and some aggressive firefighters working inside, the fire was contained in the attic space.

The fire destroyed the garage and the home had extensive damage but fortunately for the family the dog was rescued alive and well from a back bedroom.

The Balance of the assignment for this fire included:

Mattydale E-1, R-2

Moyers Corners R-3 (Rapid Intervention Team)

Liverpool E-2

Lyncourt T-2

NAVAC Ambulance (1 ALS ambulance and Rehab Unit)
